An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: How a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Beside me was an Iraqi man studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did for a living, and I explained that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but immediately told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had always wanted to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
