The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
